We love content creation (especially Arabic content creation), we love open source, and we love Drupal (and other open source CMS tools)! While these tools are great, they are underappreciated in the Arab world. While they are still in need of some updates to improve ease-of-use with Arabic and with mixed LTR/RTL texts, they are incredibly powerful tools. I think the lack of awareness/appreciation/use of these and other open source tools in the region are big contributors to why it is so expensive to put up content and websites in Arabic, and why there is (proportional to Arabic-speakers in the world) so little Arabic content online. Open source is a big part of "tech for social change" or ICT3development movements. (The Hibr site is built on Drupal, and currently getting some great upgrades coming soon :-) , along with the lists of sites below.)
The folks at index-sy.com and their friends have made a great contribution to the Arabic-Drupalverse with a full guidebook in Arabic on how to use Drupal. We are also looking to organize more Drupal gatherings in Lebanon, and hopefully eventually in collaboration with some great Drupal developers/advocates in Syria, Jordan, Egypt, etc... (we're having a small one on Thursday, April 1, at our Hibr office in Beirut! 7pm). Regardless, any effort like this to improve tools, information, access, and awareness around Drupal and open source are a big help! Thanks so much to index-sy.com all else who helped on this project!
