Access to information to become a legal right in Lebanon
By May Abi Samra
The Access to Information Draft Law is finally in parliament, thanks to the work of the National Network for the Right to Access to Information. But, what does this law mean, and what is the National Network?
The Network was formed at the initiative of the Lebanese Parliamentarians Against Corruption (LebPac), the Lebanese Transparency Association (LTA), and the 'Association pour la Défense des Droits et des Libertés (ADDL)', in collaboration with the American Bar Association (ABA) Rule of Law Initiative in Lebanon.
The Network’s Legal Working Group drafted the Access to Information Draft Law, which requires every person to have access to, and be able to view, information and documents held by the Lebanese government. In other words, the Lebanese government will be obliged to give out information to anyone, if this bill becomes a law.
